In a concerted effort to transform Visakhapatnam into a plastic-free city, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) recently conducted a special drive as part of the “Eco Vizag – Zero Plastic” campaign. The operation involved raiding 6,337 establishments across the city, resulting in the seizure of a staggering 843 kilograms of plastic waste.
During the raids, officials inspected a wide range of establishments, including shops, restaurants, and commercial establishments, to identify and seize banned plastic items. The use of single-use plastic items, such as carry bags, cups, plates, and cutlery, was strictly monitored. Violators of the plastic ban were penalized under the provisions of the Swachh Survekshan 2023 guidelines.
As a result of the operation, a total of 843 kilograms of plastic waste was confiscated from the raided establishments. Additionally, a sum of Rs. 2.21 lakhs was collected as penalties from the offenders. This significant step forward in the “Eco Vizag – Zero Plastic” campaign underscores the commitment of the local authorities and the citizens of Visakhapatnam to create a cleaner and greener city.
The drive is part of the larger national initiative, Swachh Bharat Mission, which aims to make India clean and hygienic. It aligns with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ Amrit Mahotsav celebration, showcasing the country’s progress in various sectors.
The successful implementation of the “Eco Vizag – Zero Plastic” campaign not only reinforces the resolve to combat environmental pollution but also highlights the collective responsibility towards sustainable living. The GVMC and its partners remain dedicated to promoting the #VizagSaysNotoPlastic movement, as they continue working tirelessly towards making Visakhapatnam a model city in the fight against plastic waste.
