The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is undertaking a project to construct 20 model bus shelters at key junctions in Visakhapatnam, aiming to enhance amenities for commuters. With an expenditure of ₹4.6 crore, the GVMC plans to create modern bus stops resembling the successful model bus stop at Andhra University – China Waltair Road, which was unveiled during the G-20 working group committee meeting two months ago.

In contrast to refurbishing existing bus stops, the GVMC has chosen to completely rebuild the shelters, allocating approximately ₹20 to ₹40 lakh per stop based on factors like passenger flow, area, and bus frequency. The new bus shelters will feature granite flooring, well-designed display boards, announcement systems, proper lighting, comfortable seating, and advertising spaces. Construction work is progressing rapidly at all locations.

The redevelopment of existing bus shelters has become imperative as numerous outdated structures lack essential infrastructure, such as broken or rusted seats, inadequate roofing, lighting, and informative boards, despite high tourist footfall in the city.

However, the ongoing development has inconvenienced passengers, compelling them to endure the scorching sun at major junctions. Commuters express their approval of new bus shelters but demand the provision of temporary shelters until the completion of the new facilities. The GVMC’s initiative aims to promote public transport and improve the overall commuting experience in Visakhapatnam.
