Visakhapatnam, India – In a significant development showcasing the deepening defense ties between India and Vietnam, the Honorable Raksha Mantri announced the gifting of the in-service missile corvette INS Kirpan to Vietnam during the recent visit of Gen Phan Van Giang, Minister of Defence of Vietnam, to India. This historic gesture underscores the strong bilateral relations rooted in historical linkages, cultural ties, and shared economic interests.

INS Kirpan, the third indigenously built Khukri class missile corvette currently in active service in the Indian Navy, has set sail on its final journey from Visakhapatnam, marking a momentous occasion. The vessel, equipped with advanced weapons systems and state-of-the-art sensors, has played a vital role in various operational and humanitarian assistance missions.

A grand ceremonial function took place at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam, where officers and personnel of the Eastern Naval Command bid an emotional farewell to INS Kirpan. The Chief of Staff, VAdm Sanjay Vatsayan, led the delegation, emphasizing the significance of this moment and the enduring friendship between the two nations.

The defense cooperation between India and Vietnam has been steadily growing over the past decade. The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Defense Cooperation in 2009 paved the way for multifaceted collaboration. In 2016, the relationship was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, highlighting the shared vision for regional stability and adherence to the rules-based international order.

Naval cooperation between the two countries has been particularly robust, with frequent operational interactions, structured dialogues, and information sharing mechanisms. This extensive Navy-to-Navy collaboration encompasses initiatives focused on capacity building and capability enhancement, including the supply of spares, ship repairs, deputation of instructors, and regular goodwill visits by naval ships and delegations.

The transfer of INS Kirpan to the Vietnam People’s Navy is a testament to India’s commitment to assisting its like-minded partners in enhancing their defense capabilities. This generous gesture aligns with India’s vision of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the world is one family) and ‘Security and Growth for all in the Region (SAGAR)’. It also marks a historic milestone as it is the first time India has gifted a fully operational corvette to a friendly foreign country.

The gifting of INS Kirpan symbolizes the trust, mutual respect, and deepening cooperation between India and Vietnam, further cementing their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. As the missile corvette embarks on its journey to Vietnam, it represents a new chapter in the maritime partnership, promising a brighter future of collaboration and shared security in the region.
