Jyothi Yerraji’s achievements in breaking a 21-year-old National record and becoming the first Indian woman to record a sub-13 second mark in the women’s 100 meters hurdles are remarkable. Her success in winning two gold medals at the National Games held in Gujarat last year is also noteworthy. It is unfortunate that despite her achievements, Jyothi is yet to receive the Rs. 10 lakh reward (Rs. 5 lakh for a gold medal winner) announced by the Government, as the file is still pending with them.

Jyothi’s background as the daughter of a private security guard and an ayah in a private hospital highlights her talent and determination. Her success in athletics is a testament to her hard work and dedication. Jyothi’s first proper training came from the training center established by the Sports Authority of AP in association with Anil Kumble’s Tenvic sports academy near Guntur. When the academy was closed, she found support from the Reliance sponsored High Performance Academy in Bhubaneswar, which funded her trips to Europe and other countries where she continued to break her own record.

It is unfortunate that despite her achievements and contributions to Indian athletics, Jyothi still struggles to secure financial support. While individuals and organizations have provided her with small amounts of funding, a significant amount of support continues to elude her. Jyothi’s request for help from the Government is understandable given her achievements and the challenges she faces. Hopefully, the Government will act soon and provide Jyothi with the financial support she deserves.
