Visakhapatnam, on Friday(29th September 2023) night as a massive wooden box with iron hooks washed ashore on RK Beach, drawing the curiosity of locals. In response to this unusual discovery, the city police took swift action, guarding the box throughout the night as a precautionary measure.
On Saturday morning, officials employed a crane to carefully relocate the gigantic box to the vicinity of the YMCA beach. Anticipation ran high among onlookers, with many speculating that the box might contain valuable artifacts of historical significance. However, their hopes were dashed when the box was eventually opened, revealing that it was empty.
Maritime experts weighed in on the matter, shedding light on the box’s probable origin. According to them, such wooden boxes were historically utilized as fenders along jetties to safeguard boats and the jetty structure itself from damage. These boxes served as protective buffers in maritime settings. It is worth noting that modern pneumatic fenders have now replaced these wooden counterparts, marking a transition in maritime safety practices.
The peculiar wooden box, with its apparent historical charm, bore the hallmarks of craftsmanship from the British era.
This incident is not the first of its kind in Visakhapatnam, where items have mysteriously washed up on the coast. The Archaeology Department was called in to examine the box, adding to the intrigue. In a similar vein, in May 2022, a golden-colored chariot-shaped object appeared on a beach in Srikakulam district, sparking curiosity and fascination.
