Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gidugu Rudra Raju met with party leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday, July 2, to discuss the issue of the privatisation of the Vizag Steel Plant. Mr. Gandhi, who was on his way to Khammam to address a public meeting, made a brief stopover at the Gannavaram airport, where the meeting took place.
After the meeting, Mr. Rudra Raju informed reporters that Rahul Gandhi responded positively to his request to visit Andhra Pradesh and address a public meeting organized by the Congress against the privatisation of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. Mr. Gandhi expressed his support for the cause and stated that he would visit the state either in July or August to highlight the issue.
During his Bharat Jodo Yatra, Rahul Gandhi had vehemently opposed the Centre’s decision to privatize the steel plant and expressed full support for the protesting employees. He consistently stated that the Congress party is committed to protecting public sector companies as they serve social objectives unlike the private sector.
Mr. Rudra Raju emphasized that the privatisation of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant is a crucial issue in the state, and Rahul Gandhi’s support would greatly boost the morale of the workers who have been protesting against the move under the Joint Action Committee.
Upon his arrival at the airport, Rahul Gandhi was greeted by Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee in-charge and AICC Secretary Manikarao Govindrao Thakre, senior party leader J.D. Seelam, and other prominent party members and workers. The reception was warm, and the leaders discussed various matters before Rahul Gandhi proceeded to his scheduled public meeting in Khammam.
Rahul Gandhi’s visit and his commitment to the cause of protecting the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant from privatisation have generated significant enthusiasm among party members and workers in Andhra Pradesh. It is expected that his public meeting, once scheduled, will draw large crowds and further galvanize the opposition against the government’s privatisation plans.
