Visakhapatnam, June 24, 2023 – Janaki, a 22-year-old Royal Bengal tigress, passed away at the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park in Visakhapatnam due to age-related complications. The post-mortem report revealed that senility caused multi-organ failure. Janaki’s remarkable lifespan exceeded that of tigers in the wild, highlighting the dedicated care provided by the zoo staff.

This unfortunate incident follows the recent loss of another tigeress, Kumari, who also succumbed to age-related issues. Kumari, who had given birth to nine white tiger cubs during her 16 years at the Vizag zoo, was brought from Hyderabad’s Nehru Zoological Park in 2007.

The losses of Janaki and Kumari emphasize the challenges faced by aging animals in captivity and underscore the importance of conservation efforts for endangered species. It serves as a poignant reminder of our collective responsibility to safeguard these magnificent creatures for future generations.
