Visakhapatnam, June 9, 2023: In observance of World Oceans Day on June 8, various organizations and institutions in Visakhapatnam came together to raise awareness about the importance of ocean conservation and sustainable practices. Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) organized a coastal clean-up drive along the city’s coast, bringing together environmental activists, executives, officers, NGO representatives, and students.

Volunteers armed with gloves and bags gathered at RK Beach at 6 am to collect litter and debris. Nandani Salaria, the zoo curator, emphasized the significance of collective action in addressing the challenges faced by the oceans. Participants from government departments, NGOs, educational institutions, and other organizations joined forces to contribute to the conservation of the maritime ecosystem.

The clean-up drive at RK Beach was followed by a similar initiative by Andhra University, where students, research scholars, and NSS volunteers from various colleges actively participated. The event, supported by the National Centre for Coastal Research, Ministry of Earth Sciences, and Ocean Society of India, saw 130 participants collect 55 kg of debris, which was later handed over to the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation.

Certificates of participation were awarded to all the volunteers by the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park. The coastal clean-up drive aimed to draw attention to the importance of maintaining the health and biodiversity of the oceans for future generations. The event highlighted the vital role of zoological parks in promoting environmental conservation.

As the ocean covers a significant portion of the planet and plays a crucial role in oxygen production, these initiatives served as a reminder of the need for collective efforts to protect and preserve the oceans. By spreading awareness and taking practical steps, the participants demonstrated their commitment to safeguarding the planet’s vital marine ecosystems.
