Visakhapatnam a major railway hub in Andhra Pradesh, is all set to undergo a remarkable transformation as the renovation of Vizag Railway Station gains momentum. With the release of structural design drawings by IIT Varanasi, the project-execution consortium, led by railway PSU Braithwaite & Co, expects the renovation to revitalize the station and enhance the travel experience for passengers. The estimated cost of the renovation is Rs 390 crore.

Upon completion, the renovated Vizag Railway Station will boast separate arrival and departure sections, similar to those found at airports. This innovative design will introduce a unidirectional passenger flow, significantly improving safety, comfort, and convenience for travelers. The station will be able to accommodate an additional 69,000 passengers daily, augmenting its capacity from the current 81,000 passengers per day.

One of the key features of the renovation project is the focus on inter-platform connectivity. To ensure seamless movement within the station, 36 lifts, 24 escalators, ramps for the physically disabled, and a 108-meter-long air concourse will be constructed. The air concourse will connect the main station building with all platforms, as well as the west side station building at Gnanapuram, which is approximately 500 meters away. Moreover, the station will be equipped with multilevel parking facilities near each station building, a commercial plaza, and ample green areas.

The project is progressing swiftly, with various construction activities already underway. The batching plant, testing laboratory, temporary power system, and project office are already operational. Construction materials have started arriving at the site, and excavation works for the west side station building and multilevel parking house are in full swing. Additionally, the site leveling for the east side multilevel parking has been completed, and the erection works for the air concourse are scheduled to commence in September. The project is expected to be fully completed by September 2025.

The renovation of Vizag Railway Station holds immense significance as it aims to not only modernize the infrastructure but also create a more pleasant and efficient travel experience for passengers. With the introduction of separate arrival and departure sections, enhanced connectivity, and improved amenities, the station is set to become a model for railway stations across the country.

Passengers and residents of Visakhapatnam eagerly await the completion of this ambitious project, which promises to elevate the city’s transportation infrastructure and contribute to its overall development. The renovated Vizag Railway Station will undoubtedly play a vital role in promoting tourism, attracting investment, and facilitating seamless travel for both residents and visitors alike.

As the renovation gathers pace, the authorities remain committed to ensuring minimal disruption to the daily operations of the station. Efforts are being made to keep passengers informed about any changes or inconveniences that may arise during the construction period.

With the transformation of Vizag Railway Station, Visakhapatnam is poised to emerge as a thriving transportation hub, providing a seamless and world-class travel experience to its residents and visitors.
